At the beguining of your test you will be required to demonstrate your knowledge on making sure your car is roadworthy before starting a journey.You will be asked 1 show me question and 1 tell me question each question is worth 1 minor fault if incorrectly answered.
This is a full list of the questions.
Q1: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check the engine has suffficient oil.
Identify the dip stick and explain how you would check the oil with the maximum and minimum markers.
Q2: Open the bonnet, idenify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient coolant.
Identify high/low markings on the header tank check and top up when cold
Q3: Identify where the windscreen wash reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level.
Identify reservoir and check the level.
Q4: Open the bonnet, identify the brake fluid reservoir and tell me how you would check for the correct level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify reservoir check with maximum and minimum.
Q5: Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
operate the brake pedal check via reflections or ask someone to help.
Q6: Tell me how you would check the brakes are working on this car before starting a journey.
Brakes should be tested as you move off they should not feel spongy or slack and should not pull to one side.
Q7:Tell me where you would find the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how they should be checked.
Tyre pressures are found in the owners manual and should be checked once a week when the tyre is cold with a reliable pressure gauge.
Q8: Show me/explain to me how you would check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
2ways: As you pull away test your steering it should respond straight away and not feel heavy.
With the engine off steer left gently till you feel resistace then hold now switch on the engine and the steering wheel should drop as the system kicks in.
Q9: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficiant tred depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts or buldges on the outer circumference and a minimum of 1.6mm tread depth across the central 3/4 breadth of the tyre.
Q10: Show me how you would check the head lights and tail lights are working on this car.
Operate the dipped head lights, walk round the car.
Q11: Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working on this car.
Operate the hazard warning lights, walk round the car.
Q12: Show me how you would check the horn is working (off road only)
operate horn.
Q13: Show me how you would the parking brake for excessive wear.
demonstrate by applying the parking brake when it is fully applied it should not be at the end of it's working travel.
